Christmas and gifting
Here at Hooha, I have been investing in Christmas photography props and they have been arriving thick and fast these past few weeks in anticipation of creating some fabulous memories with lots of photographs of Children ready for this Christmas.
As I toiled over what to buy it got me thinking a lot about Christmas and what its all about and then the inevitable question around gifting. Which we have all become accustomed to (whether we agree with it or not!).
I was brought up by my Mum, who was a nurse and money was always tight. I remember how she always instilled in me that Christmas was about sharing memories with friends and family and not about what you receive that is tangible. Don’t get me wrong, there were always gifts under the tree, but more importantly, our Christmas’s were always full of warm and happy moments that we shared with friends and family.
So, as I have grown up I have always favoured gifts that mean something, rather than those that cost a lot of money. This is possibly compounded by the fact that I am a January baby myself, and as such, come to recognise that many gifts I have received over the years have been gifts which have either been re-gifted to me or items they have grabbed in the sales with no thought of who I am or what indeed I like.
This may all come across as ungrateful, which I suppose it sounds if you are of the mantra, ‘something is better than nothing.’ I, however, do not follow this notion. For me, I would rather a doodle on a napkin of a giraffe (as I love giraffes!) Rather than a gift set of miniature perfumes, (I am a creature of habit and only wear two perfumes …ever.)
So with all this in mind, I have chosen the props ready for the Newborn and Children’s Christmas photography shoots to begin over the next couple of weeks with a warm glow in my heart. Thinking about all the lovely happy faces on Christmas day when, Mum’s, Dad’s, Auntie’s, Uncle’s, Grandma’s and Granddad’s open their gifts of the children in their lives. A photograph is so much more than an ordinary gift… it is the gift of memories, and given with love xx
